Lawn maintenance is a task for every homeowner in order to have a beautiful lawn. Once the winter arrives, there is nothing much that can be done to a dormant lawn. Therefore, it is important to know how to prepare for your lawn before winter comes so that your lawn will be set up for success in the coming spring next year. These are the steps for the lawn care:
Aerate Lawn
During the summer, the heat generates stress that could negatively impact the condition of the soil. The soil becomes dry and compact. Core aeration helps to reverse the negative impact on the soil. Aeration creates holes down into the soil to alleviate compaction so air, water and nutrients can reach grass roots. Deprived of their basic needs by the compacted soil, the lawn will struggle to survive. Some reasons being the lack of rainfall, and, heat which causes a lack in their healthy, rich color.
Overseed Lawn
After the long stressful summer, some part of your lawn will not survive. Therefore, it will turn into a sporadic patch. Overseeding can help you get back to the thick, lush, green lawn you have always wanted. By spreading grass seed over your existing lawn, you can thicken up the thin as well as patchy area. In the north, the best time to overseed your lawn is in the fall, when the soil is still warm. However, if you are unable to overseed your lawn in the fall, your next best time is the spring.
Mow lawn to a short height
Before overseeding your thin lawn, cut your grass shorter than normal and clean up the clippings. After mowing, rake the lawn to help loosen the soil and remove the dead grass.
Fertilize Lawn
Your soil supplies some of the nutrients that turf grass needs but most soils are not able to provide all of them during the entire growing season. A healthy and actively growing lawn uses a great deal of energy. Fertilizer helps your lawn stay healthy by promoting new leaf and root growth.
Leaf cleanup
Leaf removal is vital to keeping your lawn healthy in the fall and preparing it for the winter. Neglecting to remove dead leaves from your lawn suffocates your grass and kills it, inhibits water evaporation, and conceals dangerous pests.
